Michigan County Road Commission Self-Insurance Pool

Before the Pool began, many county road commissions had trouble finding insurance carriers to cover liability, property and physical damages. In 1983, a group of county road commissioners started the Pool to provide reliable, consistent and affordable liability and physical damage coverage to Michigan county road commissions. Today, the Pool covers nearly all types of property and casualty coverage (except health and life) needed by county road commissions.

Safety Workshops
Registration for upcoming Safety Workshops hosted by CRASIF and MCRCSIP is now open. Each road commission should fill out and submit a registration form.

Wingplow Safety
The use of wing-plows for winter operations at Michigan County Road Commissions has increased over the past few years. We recommend that all members review the MDOT Maintenance Advisory 2008-06 of November 10, 2008, and follow the safe work practices and precautions referenced in the MDOT video.


By pooling together resources from more than 70 county road commissions, the Pool can safely invest a significant amount into a growing portfolio. An actuary investigates our exposure to risk and weighs our potential earnings. We use those resources to secure the funds necessary in the event of having to settle a major lawsuit. And, since our members have a large stake in any lawsuit, we aggressively pursue the most frugal course of action in litigation. With the Pool acting on your county road commission's behalf, you still control the situation.
